Yidel and Hannah Moser, Galacia, Austrian Ukraine sometime in the late 19th century.

I believe this picture to be of Yidel Moser and his wife Hannah, who were the parents of Dvorah (Dobbie) Ornstein, (nee Moser), who was of course the wife of Mordechai (Max/Mark)Ornstein. A big Thank-You to Shirley Korner (nee Austin) of Lewes, East Sussex, England for providing me with the photograph. Shirley is one of the two daughters of the late Frank Austin O.B.E., who was the oldest son of Mordechai and Dvorah Ornstein.

  1. Frank was not in fact the eldest son. Harry was. However Frank was treated as the head of the family, and was the boss of the furniture business.
Harry did not go into the business. He went to Australia, staying in Bondi for a few years in the 1920s, and returned to England where he ran a shoe shop.
My mother told me Frank got the blessing from his father in preference to Harry. I have spoken to rabbis since who do not know of such a custom (of giving the blessing to a son other than the elder) However Isaac did it for Jacob......
