The family originate from Eastern Europe, Romania also spelt Rumania and Roumania) in the 19th century. That's all we know, presently. No district. No town. No Shtetl or Dorph. It is however likely they lived in Galatia, the region of Romania which had a large Jewish population.
The geographical origins of my branch of the Herscovich family is one of the things I aim to establish with the publication of this geneological blog.

Samuel Herscovich and his wife Annie / Hannah (nee Dubosky) came to settle in London, England and had laid down roots in Whitechapel, East London at least by 1911. It is likely they left Romania due to the dangers of the Jewish persecutions or Pogroms.
They would anglicise their name to the more English sounding surname Hurst. This is where their UK history begins...

Location:Galatia, Romania
Anne Hurst (nee Dubosky) was my great aunt, eldest sister of my maternal grandmother, Jenny (married name Smolask). My aunt Anne died in 1970 and my uncle Sam in July 1971, a few weeks before the death of my grandmother. As mentioned in the blog, Sam Hurst came from Romania but I think that the Dubosky family came from White Russia (now Belarus). David Lonsdale, Alton, UK.

ReplyDeleteThanks David and Hi,
ReplyDeleteI spoke to Pamela who I think is your sister a couple of times on the phone about 18 months to 2 years ago, about family history stuff. She was doing her masters on English literature like Jane Austen or the Bronte's at the time. She said she had a load of his old papers in the cellar her cellar in boxes, which contained his genealogy notes etc.
I would love to know more about the Dubosky family, particularly Myer Dusbosky and Pauline (Belinksy?) Berlinsky and Carpel Belinsky. I have a tangled web of a family tree that Peter (your dad?) drew up in the late 80's or early 90's.
He posted it to my dad, who remembers meeting you at Jonathan's baby blessing in summer 1997 in a pub in Hendon somewhere. Me and my brother David were there also, but didn'y really know anyone.I remember one old lady who resembled my Granny (Yetta)quite alot, but didn't know who she was. I assumed she was a cousin, but never spoke to her.
What is your email David? I can send you the family tree if you need it.
I don't know a lot about the Dubosky family, Benjamin, but I'd be very glad to tell you all I know. I'm interested that you have a copy of the family tree that my dad constructed, since I don't seem to have a copy. I do remember that it included very few family members earlier than my great-grandparents' generation. I'm not sure whether Pamela would now find it easy to locate these papers. Anyway, I'd be very glad to exchange information: my e-mail address is d-lonsdale@supanet.com. I remember Jonathan's "do" in Hendon. I also remember that your dad came to visit my mum and dad several years earlier (when I was visiting them at the flat where they lived in Clapton at that time). I seem to remember that you came with him. I remember that he said that he knew one of my ex-schoolmates (Howard Leigh), who worked for the (then) DHSS.
